A 13-year-old cyclist died in Saint-hyacinthe after a collision with a truck-remorque on boulevard Laframboise at about 13 h 30. Emergency services were called to the scene, where the girl’s death was established after she was struck while crossing the street by bicycle.
The cyclist was a student in secondaire 1 and was riding north when the truck turned from rue Martineau. The truck driver was taken to hospital because of shock.
Marc Tessier and boulevard Laframboise
Marc Tessier, a sergeant with the Sûreté du Québec, said the first information available indicated the driver did not see the cyclist. He stated: “Selon les premières informations, le conducteur du camion n’aurait pas aperçu la cycliste”.
Police also closed boulevard Laframboise between rue Martineau and Allaire while a reconstruction officer analyzed the collision to understand its circumstances and causes. That work is aimed at establishing how the truck and the cyclist came into contact at the intersection area.
Chantal Soncy and Simon-Pierre Savard-Tremblay
Chantal Soncy said she learned of the tragedy with “profonde tristesse” and wrote on Facebook: “Mes pensées les plus sincères accompagnent sa famille, ses proches ainsi que toute la communauté scolaire durement éprouvée par cette terrible épreuve”. Simon-Pierre Savard-Tremblay also offered condolences, writing: “Une tragédie bouleversante frappe notre région aujourd’hui” and “Toute la communauté maskoutaine est derrière vous.”
The immediate consequence for drivers in Saint-Hyacinthe was the closure of part of boulevard Laframboise while investigators worked at the scene. For the family, the school community and nearby residents, the case now moves through the police reconstruction process that will determine the documented circumstances behind the fatal crash.
