Kathy Hochul Announces $2 Billion STAR Tax Relief for 2.78 Million New Yorkers

Gov. made her Kathy Hochul tax relief announcement Monday, saying nearly 3 million New Yorkers will receive more than $2 billion in STAR tax relief this summer and fall. For Long Island homeowners, the program reaches 572,000 households now set to receive a credit or exemption on their school tax bill.

The relief runs through New York’s School Tax Relief program, which sends either a STAR credit or a STAR exemption. Homeowners with combined household income below $500,000 can receive between $350 and $600, while enrolled seniors with income below $110,750 can receive $700 to $1,500.

Hochul said more than 500,000 eligible Long Islanders will receive $659.2 million in tax relief this summer through the fall. Across New York, the total reaches 2.78 million New Yorkers and more than $2 billion, with the payments and school tax reductions arriving over the same stretch.

Recipients who get a tax credit will be mailed a check this summer or fall. New Yorkers can also use ny.gov/STAR to enroll in direct deposit or track delivery, which gives households a way to follow the benefit without waiting for a school tax bill to arrive.

Long Island STAR relief

The Long Island total is lower than last year, when the state said 582,000 homeowners received $698.4 million. The state Tax Department said that kind of variation is a normal fluctuation, tied to households that move above the $500,000 income limit, home sales and closing dates, and deaths and estate settlements that change yearly counts.

For Long Islanders trying to map their own benefit, the immediate step is simple: check whether the household fits the income limits, then watch for either a mailed check or a bill reduction depending on whether the household gets a credit or an exemption. The state has also scheduled regional STAR seminars for July 28 at East Meadow Public Library in East Meadow and July 29 at Middle Country Public Library in Selden.
