Mikhail Torrance has died at 37.
His cause of death is unknown at this time.
The University announced his death on Thursday.
Alabama Crimson Tide Career Summary
Torrance played for the Alabama Crimson Tide for four seasons between 2006 and 2010, developing into a primary ball-handler and scorer by his senior year.
He came through two coaching staffs: Mark Gottfried coached Torrance's first three seasons, and the 2009-10 season was the first year under head coach Anthony Grant.
All-SEC Second Team Honors
During his senior season, Torrance averaged 15.6 points and 5.1 assists per game and earned Second-Team All-SEC honors, solidifying his reputation as one of the team’s most dependable guards.
That 2009-10 stat line also included 5.7 rebounds, 0.8 steals and 0.3 blocks, numbers that underlined his all-around role on offense and defense for the Crimson Tide.
Mary G. Montgomery High School
Born September 30, 1988, in Eight Mile, Alabama, Torrance first drew statewide attention at Mary G. Montgomery High School.
"Torrance, born September 30, 1988, in Eight Mile, Alabama, rose to prominence as a skilled point guard at Mary G. Montgomery High School, where he averaged 22 points, eight assists, and seven rebounds as a senior." the obituary said.
That senior-season production helped him reach the University level and set expectations for a pro career.
He was not selected in the 2010 NBA Draft; a heart condition played a role in teams passing on him in the 2010 NBA Draft, and later in 2010 Torrance collapsed during a workout.
After that collapse his brain was deprived of oxygen for over 10 minutes, a life-changing medical emergency that shaped the rest of his athletic and personal life.
From 2011 to 2015 Torrance continued his playing career overseas and in short-term stints, taking the court in Turkey, Canada, Finland, the Dominican Republic and Mexico as he pursued professional opportunities.
"Mikhail Renard Torrance, a former standout college basketball player at the University of Alabama, is being remembered for his athletic talent, perseverance, and resilience following a life-changing medical emergency during his professional career," the obituary said.
His death closes the chapter on a four-season Alabama career that peaked in 2009-10 with All-SEC Second Team recognition and a clear statistical footprint for the program.
