An aerial photo taken on June 16 showed the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool still green from algae after renovation work had been completed earlier this month. Michelle Del Rey reported that the reflecting pool had not returned to its intended appearance, and workers were still treating it the next day.
June 16 Over Washington, DC
The photo was taken from a passenger plane descending into Washington, DC. It captured the algae-ridden Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool after the Department of the Interior finished work there earlier this month, showing that the renovation did not end the discoloration.
Del Rey wrote that the pool remained green despite the completed work. The same aerial image also showed the White House South Lawn, which had been damaged after the June 14 UFC fight.
Hydrogen Peroxide On June 17
On June 17, workers were seen pouring hydrogen peroxide into the Reflecting Pool to reduce the algae. As of Wednesday, parts of the Reflecting Pool remained green, leaving a visible gap between the completed renovation and the pool’s current look.
The White House said on June 16 that ScottsMiracle-Gro and the National Park Service will work to restore the grass on the South Lawn, and said ScottsMiracle-Gro has committed $1 million toward that project. The same aerial view also showed a covering on the National Mall with the message 8647, which triggered an investigation from the U.S. Park Police.
Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool
The immediate concern for visitors is simple: the landmark still looked discolored after the federal work was done, and cleanup was still under way two days later. What caused the Reflecting Pool to turn algae-green after the renovation remains the open question in this sequence, while crews keep treating the water with hydrogen peroxide.
