Oscar Wembanyama said the pressure of being Victor Wembanyama’s younger brother is real, and he did not soften it. At the 19th edition of adidas Eurocamp in Treviso, Italy, the 19-year-old SIG Strasbourg forward said the comparisons are “definitely not easy” and admitted that people often recognize him for no other reason than the family name.
That interview came as scouts were already watching him after a strong showing in a lopsided win, where he said he finished with 12 points, seven rebounds and three assists. For a 6-foot-9 combo forward trying to build a pro résumé, the setting mattered: this was not just another summer run, but a stage where every possession is measured against a famous standard.
Wembanyama said the way he has handled the season changed when a new coach told him at the start that he needed to be more focused and bring more energy. He said he has improved a lot since then. He also described himself as a versatile player who can play and defend multiple positions, which is exactly the kind of profile that draws attention at Eurocamp and inside a professional rotation.
The family factor still sits underneath everything. Wembanyama said he can turn to his sister, his brother and his parents for advice, but he also said he cannot ignore that his brother is the best player in the world. That is the friction in his path: he wants to shut out the noise, yet the noise follows him into every gym, every interview and every scouting conversation.
He said he started basketball in 2021, when he was 14, after playing handball from age eight for about five years and switching after the COVID lockdown. That late start helps explain why he keeps circling back to defense and focus. Defense, he said, is vital in today’s game, while the part he most wants to improve is playmaking. For now, the question is not whether he has the family name. It is whether he can turn a promising frame, growing confidence and a clear role into more senior minutes before scouts stop treating him as Victor’s brother and start treating him as Oscar.
