Tobias Turley leads West End Live as 50 musicals return

West End live returned to Trafalgar Square on 20 and 21 June, with more than 50 West End musicals filling the square across the weekend. Tobias Turley was one of three Saturday hosts, joining Shanay Holmes and Mathilde Barker as the event opened to the public without tickets.

Saturday ran from 11am to 5pm, while Sunday was scheduled from 12pm to 4pm. That fixed timetable matters for anyone trying to catch a specific performance, because the programme moves quickly and the crowd is first come, first served until capacity is reached.

West End Live is presented by Westminster City Council and the Society of London Theatre, and the format is built for turnover rather than long stays. Accessible viewing areas were available through advance registration, with British Sign Language interpretation and a calm space on site for people who needed them.

Tobias Turley shared Saturday hosting duties with Shanay Holmes and Mathilde Barker, giving the opening day a clear on-stage anchor while performances cycled through hit musicals, previews of upcoming pieces and soloists. The structure is efficient: arrive early, identify your viewing point and expect the programme to move on even if you are still settling in.

Queues at Trafalgar Square

Organisers warned that Trafalgar Square would reach capacity, and they also said queues were expected, especially for people trying to get near the front. The event is free, but free access does not remove the practical limit that comes with a central London square filled with live performances.

On Sunday, Courtney Bowman and Tosh Wanogho-Maud took over hosting duties, with The Lion King set for 12pm, Matilda The Musical for 12.15pm, Kinky Boots for 1.20pm and Magic Mike Live for 2.10pm. For anyone planning a visit, the simplest route is still the one organisers gave: use Charing Cross, Embankment, Leicester Square or Piccadilly Circus, then move early before the square fills and the queue length turns into the real gatekeeper.

Victoria Embankment Gardens screening

West End Live also streamed performances and backstage content online through Official London Theatre’s YouTube and social media channels, while a free live screening area in Victoria Embankment Gardens gave people outside the square another way to follow the weekend. With no shade in Trafalgar Square and heat expected, the practical advice was plain: bring water and wear SPF, or expect the day to feel longer than the schedule suggests.
