Ayyoub Bouaddi stood out in Morocco’s 1-1 draw with Brazil on Saturday, and the 18-year-old did it from central midfield in the World Cup group-stage opener. He finished with 53 carries and the most touches for Morocco, a rare breakout line for a player in his position.

Ayyoub Bouaddi and 53 carries

Bouaddi’s numbers tell the story. He had 87 touches, completed 53 carries and helped drive Morocco’s press against Brazil, starting by pressing Casemiro inside the first minute. In the 87th minute, he applauded Chadi Riad’s pass before taking a touch, a small moment that captured how often Morocco funneled play through him.

Morocco also sent 47 per cent of its attacks down the right-hand channel, where Achraf Hakimi could push forward and connect with the midfield work in front of him. Bouaddi did not drift through the match; he was involved in it, repeatedly receiving, carrying and releasing the ball while Morocco held Brazil to a draw.

The setting sharpened the performance. Morocco met Brazil in both teams’ World Cup group-stage opener, and Brazil came in as one of the five-time world champions. Bouaddi looked at ease in a match that demanded control, not just energy, and that is where the performance becomes unusual.

Central midfielders rarely become World Cup breakout talents because the role usually asks for physical and tactical maturity at the same time. Bouaddi fit that profile early. He plays for Lille, became the youngest player to reach 50 appearances in Ligue 1, and helped Lille secure a famous Champions League victory over Real Madrid on the eve of his 17th birthday in 2024.

France, Morocco, and Hassan Bouaddi

The national-team angle is harder to ignore. Bouaddi captained France’s Under-21 team as recently as March, yet he was in Morocco’s midfield against Brazil. That split reflects a player who has already moved through two international tracks while still only 18 years old.

His background has been part of the story too. Hassan Bouaddi worked as a banking director and served as deputy mayor for Creil, and Ayyoub Bouaddi was playing for AFC Creil at the age of five. He later sat for the French Baccalaureate as a 16-year-old, a year early, and is currently pursuing a degree in mathematics.

Will Bouaddi continue to choose Morocco over France at senior international level? Saturday suggested Morocco already trusts him with a central role, and the match against Brazil showed how far that trust can go when the ball keeps running through him.
