Alexandra Eala beat Elena Rybakina 7-5, 6-4 in Berlin Tennis Open 2026 on Thursday. The 21-year-old moved into the quarterfinals after a win that matched her career-best result by ranking and kept her Berlin run alive.

She was down 4-1 early before winning six of the next seven games, then finished the match in 1 hour and 32 minutes. After the last point, Eala said, "I called my dad," then added, "We were just screaming, and my mom was there, too."

The result carried extra weight because it was only the second time Eala had reached the quarterfinals of a WTA 500 tournament. She is World No. 35, and this win over Rybakina matched the top-ranked opponent she has beaten in her career.

She also backed up Wednesday's straight-sets win over Donna Vekic, turning a quick start by one opponent into another stage of progress the next day. That kind of back-to-back run is what put her into Friday's semifinal qualifier against Elina Svitolina.

Rybakina still produced numbers that usually tilt a match her way. She hit 13 aces and won 81 percent of her first serves, but Eala won 70.4 percent of her second-serve points and converted three of her seven break-point opportunities.

That split explains the finish. Rybakina owned the serving edge, yet Eala kept finding the return games that changed the score, and the 7-5, 6-4 line showed she handled the tight moments better after the early 4-1 hole.

Elina Svitolina for Friday

Friday brings the next test: Eala against sixth-seeded Elina Svitolina for a spot in the semifinals. Eala left the court saying, "I'm just really happy," and the only question the draw now answers is whether she can keep the run going one round deeper.
