Boy Kemper has joined QPR on a free transfer from NAC Breda, giving the club a left-back it had made a priority after Rhys Norrington-Davies’ loan spell from Sheffield United ended. The Dutch defender turns 27 on Sunday, and the move arrives as QPR prepare for the expected exit of Esquerdinha.

Kemper arrives with England already on his mind. He had been keen to move there, and QPR have moved first by completing a deal that costs no transfer fee after his contract at NAC Breda ended.

QPR and Esquerdinha

The timing matters for QPR because left-back had become a need, not a luxury. Esquerdinha, who is 20, was signed last summer and has made 16 Championship appearances, but the club are now preparing for his expected departure.

That leaves QPR with a position that has already changed once this year and may still change again later in the summer. Kemper fills the immediate gap, while the club are still exploring the possibility of adding another left-back before the window closes.

Boy Kemper at NAC Breda

Kemper brings a path that stretches beyond one season in the Netherlands. He was on Ajax’s books as a youngster, played for the Netherlands at Under-18 and Under-19 levels, and had a three-year spell at Den Haag before joining NAC Breda in 2023.

His time at NAC Breda ended with the club relegated from the Dutch top flight last season, which made a free move available when his contract ran out. QPR have taken that opening and secured a player who already wanted the step into England.

QPR's left-back plan

The signing solves one piece of QPR’s left-side reshuffle, but it does not close the door on more movement there. Rhys Norrington-Davies’ loan from Sheffield United had already shaped the club’s thinking, and Kemper now gives them a direct response to that exit.

What happens next is whether QPR stop at one new left-back or keep going and add another later in the summer. For now, Kemper is the new starter in the queue, and the club have acted before the position drifted any further.
