Rassie Erasmus named Quan Horn at fly-half for South Africa vs Barbarians this weekend. The 24-year-old has never started there for the Lions, and the call arrives with South Africa testing depth in a position that is short on first-choice options.
Quan Horn and South Africa
Jean de Villiers backed the selection by pointing to Horn’s skill set. “Quan Horn is a quality player. He has done so well for the Lions; he’s got the pace, a nice boot, passing game,” he said on On the Boks Unpacked.
That profile is part of why Horn gets this look now. South Africa need a player who can handle the ball, move it on and keep shape under pressure, and the selection gives them a live test of whether his club traits carry over when he starts at 10 for The Springboks.
Schalk Burger on fly-half cover
Schalk Burger framed the match-up around South Africa’s forward strength and the space that can create behind the scrum. “The Barbarians side that we are playing against have got decent backs, but our pack of forwards can monster them. Then if you’re number 10, then you don’t have to go into that tricky game management situation. You can just play,” he said on On the Boks Unpacked.
He also pointed to Andre Esterhuizen as a stabiliser next to Horn. “He’s got a nice release valve next to him in Andre the Giant. If you’re in doubt, here you go,” Burger said. Jean de Villiers added that Willie le Roux is unavailable this weekend but can do a job at fly-half, and that he usually moves into first receiver anyway.
Siyaya, Moyo, and the depth test
The selection sits inside a wider effort to build depth. De Villiers said, “A lot of the selections are just being able to see how the guys go and build depth. If you’re looking at the fly-half berth with Sacha injured, Handre not up for selection yet, and Manie, we need to build.”
He also pointed to the other cover options. “You’re probably not going to start with Zekhethelo Siyaya, who could cover there. You’ve got Vusi Moyo on the bench. You’ve got players where you have a game where you can provide opportunities, see how they go against a pretty decent quality side,” he said.
That leaves Horn with the most direct pressure point in the side: game management at fly-half, where De Villiers said the role demands more decision-making than simply moving into the position. South Africa will find out how he handles that job against the Barbarians, with the backup picture already mapped behind him.
