Crysencio Summerville scores first Netherlands goal as Manchester United eye him

Crysencio Summerville scored his first goal for the Netherlands in the World Cup opener against Japan on Sunday, and Manchester United are strongly interested in him. The 24-year-old has moved from a low-cost Leeds United signing to a player linked with a Champions League club.

Crysencio Summerville at the World Cup

Summerville is a wide forward who has most often played on the left for English clubs, with almost 60 per cent of his appearances there coming in that attacking role. He stands somewhere in the region of 5ft 9in.

That goal against Japan is the latest marker in a season that has already pushed his profile higher. For a winger, scoring in a World Cup opener gives United a cleaner read on end product than club highlight clips alone.

Leeds United's transfer return

Leeds United bought him for around £1 million from PSV in 2020, when he was 18. West Ham United sold him for about £25 million in 2024, a spread that turns him into a resale case as much as a target.

His Leeds output explains the attention. In 2023-24, he made 41 starts in the Championship, scored 19 goals and added nine assists. He was also voted the players' player of the year at Elland Road.

Manchester United's interest

The link is not built on one match alone. His Leeds career became more prominent in 2022 after he was thrust into a difficult situation that ended in relegation from the Premier League, and he has since shown he can carry a larger attacking load over a full season.

Manchester United will play in the Champions League next season, which raises the level of the move being discussed. The open question is simple: whether that interest turns into a bid, and whether the price lands closer to the £25 million mark from 2024 or climbs beyond it.
