Alex Eala beat Elina Svitolina 6-3, 6-4 on Friday to reach the Berlin semifinals for the first time. The win was her sixth Top 10 victory, and it came after she had already upset Elena Rybakina one day earlier.

Eala needed 1 hour and 23 minutes to finish the job against World No. 8 Svitolina. She broke her five times and finished with 19 winners and nine unforced errors, a clean line in a match that still tightened late.

Berlin semifinals and Noskova

Linda Noskova will be next after beating Paula Badosa 6-1, 6-3 in 68 minutes. That sets up a second WTA Tour Driven by Mercedes-Benz meeting between Eala and Noskova, and their Berlin match is a rematch of Recent Indian Wells, where Noskova dropped just two games.

Noskova’s numbers were sharp too: eight aces, more than 73% of first-serve points won, and all seven break points saved. That is the form Eala now has to solve after back-to-back upsets in Berlin.

Eala’s late hold

The closing stretch was not clean. Eala failed to serve out the match on her first attempt before closing it out, and she said in her on-court interview that it was an honor to compete against Svitolina. “Elina is a huge fighter, and I've seen it many times,” she said. “I've been watching her since I was a kid, so to be able to compete with her today is such an honor, and I really admire her.”

She added, “She's a mother, and I find her to act with such elegance and strength, and I'm really lucky to have had this match today.” Eala’s second grass-court semifinal now gives her another chance to turn a run built on high-end wins into something bigger in Berlin.
