Graham Potter Sweden ended with Viktor Gyokeres scoring in the 89th minute to beat Poland at Strawberry Arena in Stockholm and seal a World Cup play-off win. Potter called it the best night of his career, and Sweden now move on to only their second World Cup appearance since 2006.
Gyokeres Delivers In Stockholm
Gyokeres settled it late. His 89th-minute goal turned a tight play-off into the result Sweden needed, and Potter's reaction was as direct as the finish: he said it was the best night of his career.
The coach also said, “Got f****** p****d!” That line tells you how much the result cut through for him after a long route back into international football and a night decided by one decisive moment.
Potter's Sweden Route
Potter took the Sweden job in October and has since extended his contract to 2030. He has also been tied to the country for years: two of his kids were born in Sweden, he spent seven years there, and he worked at Ostersunds.
His first football memory goes back to 1986, when he was 11 years old and watching Diego Maradona. He said, “Back in those days, the World Cup was the only time you could see football on the telly, apart from maybe the FA Cup. As a kid, that's where I started. So, to get the chance to experience that and to work in that environment, it's a dream.”
From Bottom To World Cup
Sweden reached the play-offs through the Nations League after finishing bottom of their qualifying group. They still took one of the four play-off spots, then used the Poland win to keep the route alive.
That makes the run unusual even before the contract extension is added to it. Potter has already been praised by Pep Guardiola as the best English manager, and he said he will sing the Swedish national anthem at the tournament as Sweden prepare for their second World Cup appearance since 2006.
For Sweden, the next step is simple: build around Gyokeres and Alexander Isak after surviving the play-off route. For Potter, the night in Stockholm now sits at the top of a career that has taken him from Chelsea and West Ham to a World Cup place with Sweden.
