England vs Scotland turned on the first ball at Headingley when Amy Jones chipped Kirstie Gordon to mid off, leaving England 1-1 and immediately on the back foot in the Women’s T20 World Cup. By the sixth over, though, they had reset to 51-1, with Sophia Dunkley carrying the reply.
Gordon Strikes Early
Jones’ dismissal gave Scotland the start they wanted. Gordon removed England’s wicketkeeper with the opening delivery, and the scoreline showed the pressure straight away: 1-1 after the first over, then 5-1 after the second.
The early loss did not stop England from settling into the chase they needed. Dunkley survived a drop from Kathryn Bryce in the third over, then responded with a six. That over ended with England on 14-1, and the recovery kept moving from there.
Dunkley Takes Control
Dunkley kept finding the gaps against Gabriella Fontela and Sarah Bryce. She struck three boundaries in Fontela’s fourth over, took a four through fine leg off Sarah Bryce in the fifth, and reached 43 by the sixth over. Danni Wyatt-Hodge was alongside her on 7 as England moved to 51-1.
That sequence matters because England had already lost one of their opening pair, yet still reached the sort of Powerplay position that keeps the innings in order rather than recovery mode. A first-ball wicket usually forces a reset; here, Dunkley turned the interruption into momentum and left Scotland chasing answers after just six overs.
England XI Holds Shape
England’s listed XI also included Danni Wyatt-Hodge, Alice Capsey, Heather Knight, Freya Kemp, Danielle Gibson, Charlotte Dean, Sophie Ecclestone, Linsey Smith and Lauren Bell. Scotland’s side featured Kathryn Bryce, Sarah Bryce, Megan McColl, Pippa Sproul, Priyanaz Chatterji, Kirstie Gordon, Chloe Abel, Hannah Rainey and Gabriella Fontela.
The match stayed live beyond the sixth over, with England already rebuilt around Dunkley and Scotland needing a response to the early wicket and the tempo that followed. If they could not turn that opening strike into sustained pressure, the innings had already swung away from them.
