Gakpo Liverpool is back under pressure after Liverpool triggered Victor Munoz’s reported €40 million release clause. The move puts Andoni Iraola’s first major signing on course for a long-term deal and sharpens the fight for minutes on the left side.
Victor Munoz joins Liverpool rebuild
Liverpool’s summer rebuild keeps moving, and this one is a direct addition to the attack. Munoz is 22 years old, can play on either flank and can also feature in more central areas, which gives Iraola another option across the front line.
The fee attached to the move is reported at €40 million, or £34.6 million. That is the sort of outlay that usually comes with an immediate role in the squad, not a slow introduction.
Cody Gakpo after Luis Diaz
Gakpo, 27, already spent the 2025-26 season in a more fragile position than his numbers suggested. He scored seven Premier League goals, but he also endured a frustrating campaign after becoming Liverpool’s primary left-sided forward following Luis Diaz’s departure.
That matters because he signed a new contract less than a year ago, yet his role is still being questioned. Liverpool are not just adding depth; they are adding a player who can take the same wide minutes Gakpo has relied on and who can also move inside if Iraola wants a different look.
Rio Ngumoha and the left side
The pressure does not stop with Gakpo. Rio Ngumoha’s breakthrough campaign over the past year showed enough promise to draw interest from Bayern Munich, and Liverpool remained determined to keep him.
That leaves a crowded lane on the left side, with Gakpo, Munoz and Ngumoha all in the mix. Liverpool now have to sort the minutes around that group quickly, because Munoz’s arrival is set to be completed on a long-term contract and the shape of the attack will shift as soon as it happens.
