Tameka Hall was arrested Monday after the Volusia Sheriff’s Office said a Florida Lottery receipt needed for a $2,700 prize claim was hidden during a stop at a DeLand Walmart. Deputies said the customer had the winning ticket, but the store receipt required to keep the claim moving was no longer with him.

The case now turns on a simple paper trail: the winner still had the ticket, but the claim also depended on the receipt. For prize claims that have to go through a district office or by mail, the Lottery’s own claim form says the ticket, validation receipt, claim form and identification should stay together until the process is finished.

According to the Volusia Sheriff’s Office, the customer visited the store on Sunday morning with a winning Florida Lottery ticket. Hall was working as a cashier at a Walmart convenience store along South Woodland Boulevard and gave him instructions on how to claim the prize.

Hours later, the customer realized he did not have the receipt required to redeem the money and returned to the store. The store manager then reviewed surveillance video after the customer came back without the receipt.

Hall and the receipt

Deputies said the video showed Hall folding the receipt and placing it into the left pocket of her uniform vest before leaving work for the day. Hall later told deputies she had become distracted by another customer after speaking with the victim and put the receipt in her pocket because she planned to give it to a manager.

Deputies met with her inside Walmart’s security office on Monday morning and then went with her to her vehicle, where they recovered the winning lottery receipt. Hall was then placed under arrest on a felony grand theft charge.

Florida Lottery claim rules

The Florida Lottery says prizes of $599 or less may be claimed at an authorized lottery retailer or a district office. Prizes from $600 to $1 million, for games that do not offer an annual payment option, may be claimed at a Florida Lottery district office.

The claim form also says prizes of $250,000 or less may be claimed by mail with the required documents. Oscar Acosta said players should protect a winning ticket immediately by signing the back, taking photos and keeping every receipt tied to the claim. He told ClickOrlando, “You need to protect that ticket” and “You don’t want to lose track of that ticket.”

Walmart said Hall is no longer employed by Walmart and declined to comment on the incident. The charge remains an allegation unless proven in court, and the practical lesson for any winner is plain: once a receipt is part of a claim, it needs to stay with the ticket until the paperwork is done.
