Niall Morgan Douses Mayo With Last-Gasp Two-Point Free — Tyrone Gaa

Niall Morgan settled Tyrone GAA’s knockout tie at Healy Park with a last-gasp two-point free, sealing a 0-22 to 1-18 win over Mayo. The result sends Tyrone into the All-Ireland SFC quarter-finals and leaves Mayo heading for round three next weekend.

The final gap was two points, but the match had been tighter for most of the afternoon. The sides were level ten times, and there was nothing between them at eight apiece when the hooter sounded in the first half. That set up a second half built around one score at a time, with neither side able to create daylight for long.

Jack Carney put Mayo ahead with a two-pointer after the break, but Tyrone answered through Darren McCurry. The substitute forward came on in the second half and scored five points, giving Tyrone the edge they needed before the closing scramble.

Morgan’s winning kick came after he had already recovered from a costly mistake. On 54 minutes, his poor kick-out allowed Darragh Beirne to burst the net for Mayo, turning a narrow contest into one that still had a swing left in it. Morgan later nailed a 45 to level the game for the 10th time before his last score settled it.

Tyrone had also been boosted before throw-in by the addition of Darragh Canavan to the match-day panel among the substitutes. That gave them another option in a game that stayed locked for long spells and demanded late composure rather than a burst of early control.

All-Ireland SFC quarter-finals

Tyrone now join Louth, Cork and Galway in the quarter-finals in a fortnight’s time. Mayo move into round three next weekend, where one of Dublin, Meath, Kerry or Monaghan will await them. The draw leaves both teams with a clear short-term path, but only Tyrone have already banked the prize of a last-eight place.
