The Florida Panthers moved Mackie Samoskevich to the Seattle Kraken and pulled back a 2025 first-round selection and a 2027 second-round selection. The deal trims cost as Florida tries to keep its contention window open, but it also strips out a young winger who had been part of its depth scoring.
Samoskevich was not moved because of disappointment in his game. He had become a productive piece in third-line and power-play second-unit minutes, and his value was strong enough to bring back two draft picks rather than a simple cap dump.
Bill Zito Uses Samoskevich Value
Bill Zito chose to cash in on that value now, with the Florida Panthers entering the offseason with $15 million in cap space. The team still needs to add two goaltenders and other players to fill out the lineup, so the trade gives it another asset to work with while roster decisions keep piling up.
The move also fits the contract picture. Evolving Hockey projected a four-year deal for Samoskevich at $4.7 million per season, and he is a restricted free agent. Instead of carrying that next negotiation into a tighter cap picture, Florida converted the winger into picks while his value was high.
Samoskevich’s Production Window
The Panthers had seen enough from the former first-round pick to know what he could bring. Over the last couple of seasons, he reached a peak of 15 goals and 32 points, and the assessment was that he should have been a 20-goal scorer last season based on the shots he was generating.
He also thrived when he skated with skilled linemates and got more puck touches. That combination made him useful in a depth role, which is exactly why the trade stands out: Florida moved a productive young winger while still trying to contend, not because his game had fallen apart.
Panthers Keep Draft Capital
For Florida, the return is about flexibility as much as immediate help. A 2025 first-round selection and a 2027 second-round selection give the Panthers more currency for future moves, and the added picks could also be used as part of another trade if they decide to keep reshaping the roster.
The larger roster question is whether this is the first step in a broader build-around-the-core push or just a way to manage the cap while Sasha Barkov and Matthew Tkachuk are healthy. Luostarinen and Evan Rodrigues become unrestricted free agents next season, so the Panthers are already staring at more decisions beyond Samoskevich’s exit.
