Ronald Araujo is out for Uruguay against Cape Verde at the 2026 World Cup after a calf muscle tear, leaving Marcelo Bielsa without his defensive anchor on Matchday 2. The 27-year-old traveled to Spain for specialist medical consultants, and Uruguay is trying to keep the injury from turning into a longer problem.
The setback began during one of Uruguay’s final full-contact training sessions before the tournament began. Araujo had not progressed to on-field training by the time Uruguay lined up for Group H, which kept him out of selection for the match against Cape Verde.
Bielsa adjusts Uruguay’s defense
Bielsa used Sebastian Caceres and Mathias Olivera in the center of the defense, with Guillermo Varela filling the vacancy on the right side of the block. That shift gave Uruguay a full back line without Araujo, but it also removed one of the players the team has leaned on most in tight matches.
Uruguay entered Group H after a draw against Saudi Arabia had already added pressure to its World Cup campaign, and the group has tightened early. Losing Araujo on Matchday 2 takes away a player the team had counted on to steady the line while the points race is still open.
Spain on June 26
Uruguay’s medical camp is still working toward a return for the Group H finale against Spain on June 26. The plan is to use physical therapy to get him there, while the coaching staff keeps him out now to avoid aggregate muscle damage.
That tradeoff leaves Uruguay with a simple immediate reality: it has to get through Cape Verde without one of its most reliable defenders, then see whether the recovery window holds long enough for Spain.
