Brenda Blethyn returns as A Woman Of Substance Season 2 reaches Channel 4

Channel 4 has ordered A Woman Of Substance Season 2, bringing Brenda Blethyn and Jessica Reynolds back to continue Emma Harte’s story. The eight-episode run extends a remake that has become the channel’s most-streamed drama since It’s a Sin.

Brenda Blethyn will again play the older Emma Harte, while Jessica Reynolds returns as the younger version. The new season comes more than 40 years after Barbara Taylor Bradford’s 1979 novel first reached screen form, and the remake now sits in an awkward place: it is a streaming success, yet the original 1984 version still stands as Channel 4’s most-watched show of all time.

3 million per episode

Channel 4 said the remake drew an average audience of 3 million per episode. That scale helps explain why the drama earned another run, even with the 1984 series starring Jenny Seagrove still unbeaten on 14 million viewers after 42 years.

The renewal keeps the project on the channel’s drama slate as a title that can still pull a broad audience while also working in the on-demand space. For a remake, that is the part that matters: it is not just surviving comparison with the original, it is adding a second revenue and reach argument through streaming performance.

World War One and the 1920s

In Season 2, Emma Harte emerges from World War One and enters the world of the 1920s, still determined to make the Fairley family pay. Later, the story moves into the 1970s, where she battles to win back her life’s work from Jim Fairley, which gives the series a built-in shift from rise story to revenge story.

Katherine Jakeways is back to write alongside Roanne Bardsley, with The Forge producing. Gwawr Lloyd said, “Following the incredible success and popularity of the brilliant first series, we’re thrilled to be bringing the incomparable and iconic Emma Harte back to Channel 4 again. Series two will continue Emma’s story with all the ambition, drama and family intrigue that made A Woman of Substance such a compelling and irresistible watch.”

BritBox and Banijay Rights

BritBox bought Season 1 in the U.S. and will launch Wednesday, while Banijay Rights will distribute the series internationally. That gives the second season a clearer commercial path beyond Channel 4, and it raises the practical question viewers will ask next: when will Season 2 of A Woman of Substance be released?

Jakeways put the creative bet plainly: “We couldn’t be more delighted to be back with our beloved Emma Harte. The higher she climbs, the greater the risks, and we’re looking forward to more of everything we adore – heart-soaring romance, gut-wrenching loss, and of course, delicious revenge.” For now, the clean read is simple: Channel 4 has decided the remake has enough momentum to keep building, and Blethyn’s return gives that decision a face.
