Cerezo shuts down Barcelona's Alvarez move with €500m clause

Enrique Cerezo has shut down Barcelona's move for Alvarez, saying Julian Alvarez is an Atletico Madrid player and will stay unless the €500m release clause is paid. Barcelona are still trying to build a deal, but Atletico Madrid have put the price barrier at a level that changes the negotiation immediately.

Leverage on Alvarez

Cerezo was blunt: “Julian is an Atletico Madrid player.” He added, “Whoever wants him can come and look at the contract (the release clause), and if they’re interested, they’ll sign him; if not, they won’t.”

He also drew a line under the dispute by saying, “It seems like this is the story of the summer; you all know exactly how things stand.” That is the clearest public answer yet on where Atletico Madrid stand with the 26-year-old striker.

Barcelona have made Alvarez their priority target to lead the line under Hansi Flick, and the current plan is a package worth over €135 million. That figure sits far below the €500m clause, which leaves the club facing a decision between escalating their offer or moving on.

Atletico Madrid's stance

Atletico Madrid have already shown they are willing to harden their position. The club recently mocked Barcelona's interest by posting parody signings of Lamine Yamal and Pedri, then said not to “believe everything you see, especially if it’s related to Barca.”

Benjamin Sesko leads Barcelona shortlist as Alvarez bid stalls sits alongside the same pattern: Barcelona are probing options, but Atletico Madrid are tying Alvarez to the clause and refusing to open the door on lower terms.

Real Madrid were also turned away recently after a €150m proposal was rejected, which gives this standoff a simple market message. Atletico Madrid are treating Alvarez as a player who only moves if a club pays the full release clause, and Cerezo has now said that out loud.

Barcelona's next move

The next step belongs to Barcelona. If they want Alvarez, the numbers now define the route: push the offer far beyond €135 million, or meet the €500m clause and end the argument in one move.

Arsenal Reach $58 Million Julián Alvarez Swap Agreement adds another layer to the wider market picture, but the immediate issue remains Barcelona versus Atletico Madrid and whether either side blinks first.
