Trae Young Set to Sign $212 Million Deal With Washington Wizards

Trae Young is set to sign a four-year, approximately $212 million deal with the Washington Wizards after declining his $49 million player option on Monday. The move gives Washington a long-term answer at guard and locks in a player the team already built around in January.

The deal includes a player option in Year 4. Young is a four-time NBA All-Star, and the structure lands below the maximum he could have taken with Washington while matching the top figure he could have reached elsewhere.

Young and Washington Wizards

Washington wanted Young in January, and Young wanted Washington in January. The match became real in early January when the Washington Wizards traded for him for CJ McCollum and Corey Kispert, then kept building around him with Anthony Davis already added last season.

That is the context for Monday’s decision. The Wizards are betting on Young as a franchise leader even though he played only five games for them and averaged 17.9 points and 8.0 assists across 15 total games last season.

Will Dawkins and the core

Will Dawkins laid out the logic in May, saying, "The few games that Trae was able to play, you just saw the gravity that he has and he draws and how he'll be able to free up our guys," and adding, "Those are the horses we want to put our bets on."

He also pointed to the fit with Anthony Davis and the younger group around them: Alex Sarr, Kyshawn George, Tre Johnson, Will Riley and Bub Carrington. For Washington, the contract keeps the same core intact heading into next season rather than sending the team back to the market for another lead guard.

Young’s eight-year career has included 9.8 assists per game, and that playmaking rate is the clearest reason the Wizards are committing now. The agreement still has to move through the formal signing step, but the shape of the deal is already set: four years, roughly $212 million, and a player option in Year 4.
