Steve Borthwick named Jamie George captain again and put five uncapped players into England’s 36-man squad for the inaugural Nations Championship summer tour. The selection comes with England on a four-match losing streak and facing three Tests in three different continents in successive weeks.

Jamie George leads England

George was restored as captain in Maro Itoje’s absence, giving England a familiar leader for a tour that will test depth as well as form. Borthwick described the schedule as “very demanding”.

“I am sure by preparing well and continuing to demand the highest standards from one another every day, we will be well placed to meet the challenge,” he said. The message points to a squad built for quick turnover rather than long adjustment periods.

Five uncapped players included

Noah Caluori, Greg Fisilau, Benhard Janse van Rensburg, George Kloska and Vilikesa Sela were the five uncapped players selected. Max Ojomoh was also recalled, while Archie McParland missed out after being injured in Saturday’s Prem final.

That mix leaves England with first-time options in several spots and one immediate availability issue. Benhard Janse van Rensburg will not be qualified via residency until the following week, so he is unavailable against South Africa.

South Africa, Fiji, Argentina

England’s schedule runs through South Africa, Fiji and Argentina in three Tests in three different continents in successive weeks. That is the core challenge of the tour: not just selection, but how quickly the side can reset between trips and opponents.

The squad is also part of the build toward the 2027 Rugby World Cup, so the selection is doing two jobs at once. It has to cover the immediate Nations Championship run while giving England a look at players who may matter later in the cycle.

Fin Smith said he had to “fake” confidence after the Lions tour, a reminder that this group is carrying more than one kind of pressure into the summer. For England, the next answers will come on the field, where the captaincy shift and the five uncapped calls have to hold up under travel, fatigue and a losing run that has already sharpened the scrutiny.
