France vs Iraq was set to open under a violent thunderstorm in Philadelphie, and the start at Lincoln Financial Field was already under pressure before kickoff. Kylian Mbappé was named in the France line-up and was set to become the 10th player to reach 100 selections for the national team.
France were preparing for their second match of Coupe du monde 2026, with the short-term target set by Jules Koundé: beat Iraq and move toward qualification. The France captain had already said the larger aim was collective, but the immediate task was clear enough — Iraq first, everything else after.
Mbappé, Koundé and the France line-up
France’s starting eleven showed three changes from the team that beat Sénégal 3-1. Lucas Digne came in for Théo Hernandez, Manu Koné replaced Aurélien Tchouaméni and Bradley Barcola took Désiré Doué’s place, while Ousmane Dembélé shifted from the middle to the right wing with Michael Olise at number 10. The full France line-up was Maignan, Koundé, Upamecano, Saliba, Digne, Koné, Rabiot, Dembélé, Olise, Barcola and Mbappé.
Mbappé’s own marker sat alongside the team task. After his two goals against Sénégal, he had 14 goals at the World Cup, and his appearance against Iraq would take him to 100 selections for France. That is the kind of number that turns a routine starter’s note into a milestone.
Lincoln Financial Field under pressure
The weather was already affecting the scene around the stadium. France players inspected the pitch before the match, the grass was described as in excellent condition and as absorbing water for the moment, and the sound system later started playing music as in a traditional pre-match buildup.
For spectators, the sequence moved in the opposite direction from the storm. A message announced a return to normal, and they were then allowed into the stadium for France-Irak despite the violent thunderstorm in Philadelphia and the surrounding area. The walk-on music was “le chasseur” by Michel Delpech, which added to the sense that the match was trying to reset around the weather rather than stop for it.
That reset came with a warning attached. An internal message did not rule out another storm at 16:30 in Philadelphia, 30 minutes before kickoff, so the next decision point remained close enough to matter for anyone already inside Lincoln Financial Field. Iraq’s line-up had also been set, with three changes from the side beaten by Norway 1-4: Basil, Ali, Tahseen, Hashim, Doski, Bayesh, Iqbal, Al Ammari, Ismael, Qasem and Hussein.
France and Iraq had their teams in place, the stadium had reopened to spectators, and the weather had not fully stepped aside. If kickoff held, Mbappé would reach 100 France selections in a World Cup match shaped as much by Philadelphia’s sky as by the lineups on the pitch.
