Kylian Mbappe Scores Twice in France Vs Iran, Reaches 14

Kylian Mbappe scored twice in France vs Iran, turning France's opening World Cup game into another milestone night and lifting his tournament total to 14 goals in 15 games since 2018. The second came in the 95th minute after Senegal had cut the lead to 2-1, and Ibrahim Mbaye shook his head as the result slipped away.

Mbappe and France

Mbappe's first goal came from a pass by Michael Olise, and his second came after taking another Olise pass in his stride. The finish crossed the line in 1.03 seconds, from an estimated 29 yards, at a recorded speed of 57.6 miles per hour.

That takes Mbappe past Lionel Messi's 13 World Cup goals. Cristiano Ronaldo has eight, while the only men with more are Lionel Messi, the Brazilian Ronaldo and Miroslav Klose. Mbappe also became France's outright all-time top scorer, and he is the first player to score 2-plus goals in five different World Cup games.

Senegal in stoppage time

Senegal briefly changed the shape of the match when the lead became 2-1 in second-half stoppage time. Ibrahim Mbaye's reaction captured the moment before Mbappe's 95th-minute reply restored the gap and ended Senegal's comeback push.

Mbappe's 14 World Cup goals have not all come as clean finishes into open space. Nine have been the opening goal, a go-ahead goal, or a goal scored while France was trailing, which is why his record is built on more than volume alone.

Real Madrid form

The World Cup surge comes after a club season in which Mbappe scored 42 goals for Real Madrid but only four in his final 13 appearances. That late-season drop drew criticism, an apparent training-ground row and an Mbappe Fuera petition that claimed 96 million signatures, although its methodology was described as hazy.

Mbappe now has a record that pushes beyond Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo for World Cup scoring, and the next five weeks are the window for him to chase the remaining names above him. France leaves the match with a result; Senegal leaves with a late surge undone by one more Mbappe finish.
