Garfield AI Wins £7,000 County Court Case — Law Firm

Garfield AI said it won a county court debt claim and secured a £7,000 award for a client earlier this month at Wandsworth County Court, in what Philip Young called a landmark moment for the law firm. The case ended after a three-hour hearing in which both sides had counsel.

Young, the chief executive and co-founder, said the result showed how AI can make litigation more accessible, efficient and affordable. He said the case let a freelancer take unpaid work to trial, resist a counterclaim and recover money that had been owed.

Garfield AI had been instructed to recover unpaid fees for HR-related services provided to a hospitality business. The freelancer used the firm to generate pre-action correspondence and to prepare and issue proceedings, and Garfield AI instructed junior barrister Dominic Li shortly before the trial began.

The court found in favour of the claimant and dismissed the counterclaim. Garfield AI said that reflected the combination of AI-enabled litigation support and human courtroom advocacy.

Young said businesses have often written off debts because the cost, time and stress of litigation made recovery uneconomic. He also said AI did not replace the judge, the barrister or the legal system, but made the process more accessible, more efficient and more affordable.

Garfield AI judgment

The judgment has not been published, so the written reasoning behind the court’s decision has not been released. Garfield AI has been operating for just over a year after authorisation from the Solicitors Regulation Authority, and it says it handles debts of up to £10,000, has started more than 600 claims and has recovered £500,000 for users.

For claimants using the platform, the practical result is straightforward: a debt case can reach trial, a counterclaim can be tested, and a £7,000 award can follow even when AI handled much of the early work. What remains for readers is the judgment itself, because the legal reasoning behind the dismissal of the counterclaim is still unpublished.
