Rúben Dias is being asked to think about Manchester City again after an injury-hit season and reported Real Madrid interest. He signed a new four-year deal in August 2025, but the question now is whether his next chapter is still at Manchester City or somewhere else.
That uncertainty is built on a difficult year. Manchester City won two cups and stayed in a Premier League title chase until the final week in the 2024/25 season, yet the Champions League campaign was the only major disappointment. Dias was overplayed in the first half of the season, broke down in January and then returned briefly before being withdrawn with another issue in the second leg of the Champions League last-16 defeat to Real Madrid.
Manchester City and the next captaincy
He did not play again after that defeat, then returned to the squad for the final weeks of the season and was left on the bench for the last five matches. That stretch left a sharp contrast: Manchester City still need his leadership, but they are also moving into a new chapter after Pep Guardiola said goodbye.
Ruben Dias was confident more than a year ago that he and Manchester City had come through “through the storm”. The club has since changed around him, and he did not get the captaincy. With Bernardo Silva gone, he is now the natural candidate to lead Manchester City, but that responsibility arrives while the squad already has competition for minutes and for influence.
Real Madrid interest and Portugal
The pressure point is simple. Real Madrid could make a serious offer to Manchester City for Dias, and that puts his summer in a different category from a routine contract run.
He has already missed Portugal's opening game in the World Cup because of a minor issue, and he could return for Portugal's second game against Uzbekistan. For Manchester City, the next phase depends on whether the 29-year-old settles the fitness problems that cut into last season, or whether Real Madrid turns interest into a move that changes the shape of the back line.
Manchester City and Dias now face the same test from different angles: he has a contract, a possible leadership role and a place in the squad, but he also has a year of injury trouble behind him and a club in Real Madrid that could force a real decision.
