Brendan Sorsby applied for the NFL supplemental draft last week, then got the answer that shut that door for 2026. The league will not hold a supplemental draft this year, and it told him to focus on preparing for the 2027 draft.
That leaves Sorsby without the short-term route he had pursued. He had been working through a process that could have moved him into the league before the regular draft path, but that option is gone for now.
Brendan Sorsby and the draft path
Sorsby is a quarterback prospect with size and tools. He is listed at 6 feet 3 and 235 pounds, with 4.6 speed, a quick release and arm velocity to throw to all three levels from different platforms.
He also carries the risk that comes with a loose mechanical base. His ball placement can wander, and the Cincinnati offense limited his development in progression reads, protections and other parts of playing the position at a high level.
If he had entered the 2026 NFL Draft, he would have been QB3 for most teams and likely a mid-Day 2 choice. The projection was strong enough that Round 2 had been in play because of positional inflation.
Cincinnati and Texas Tech
The path to 2027 is clearer now. If Sorsby showed improvement in those areas during his senior year at Texas Tech, he would put himself in the 2027 first-round mix.
That is the part of the story that now matters most. The league closed the immediate supplemental route, so his evaluation shifts from a possible quick entry to a longer runway built around development.
The Browns and Jets interest
The market picture also helped explain why the supplemental idea drew attention. The Browns and Jets were described as obvious options for the most aggressive bid, while the Buccaneers, Falcons and Steelers fit the group of clubs with short-term answers but long-term question marks at quarterback.
The Packers and Eagles also sat in the mix as teams with established starters that still look for talented assets. With the 2026 supplemental path closed, any team tracking Sorsby now has to look toward the 2027 NFL Draft instead of a faster workaround.
