Porto have moved Caleb Yirenkyi into view as a possible replacement for Victor Froholdt, with the club preparing for the chance of losing its midfield star. The 20-year-old Nordsjaelland midfielder is already drawing interest from several Premier League clubs, so any move now sits inside a crowded race.
Froholdt arrived from FC Copenhagen last summer and now carries a release clause worth in excess of £70million. That figure does not make the situation simple for Porto, but it does explain why the club is planning ahead instead of waiting for the market to decide the timing for them.
Caleb Yirenkyi in Porto view
Yirenkyi has emerged as one of Porto's leading replacement options because he fits the profile of a young midfielder with room to grow. He is also a Ghanaian international, and sources view him as one of the most promising young midfielders operating outside Europe's top five leagues.
Porto are not alone in tracking him. Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea and Newcastle United are understood to be aware of his progress, which means any attempt to move first would have to happen before the wider market hardens around him.
Victor Froholdt and the market
Froholdt is the reason the search has started now. Porto are preparing for the possibility that he leaves, and his value has already pushed the club into replacement planning rather than waiting for a departure to be finalised.
Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Brighton and Newcastle United are among the clubs closely monitoring Froholdt, so the pressure is not coming from one side alone. That makes the transfer chain more complicated: Porto could lose one midfielder while competing with elite clubs for another.
Brighton and Newcastle United
Brighton view Yirenkyi as a potential long-term successor to Carlos Baleba, which gives their interest a different shape from Porto's immediate need. Brighton and Newcastle United both sit inside the same wider monitoring picture, while Porto must decide whether to formalise their interest before other clubs move first.
For now, the route is clear even if the destination is not. Porto want Yirenkyi as a fallback plan, but the presence of Brighton and several Premier League clubs means the race around him may tighten quickly once one club makes the first real move.
