Dailyn Swain projects as a 2026 NBA Draft first-round pick

Dailyn Swain is being projected as a likely first-round pick in the 2026 NBA Draft after averaging 17 points and becoming Texas’ best player last season. His rise gives NBA teams a clear question to solve: how much upside they are willing to buy despite real concerns about his jumper, decision-making and defense.

Texas and the breakout

Swain’s jump from 11 points as a sophomore to 17 points last season changed his profile fast. He followed Sean Miller to Texas, won second-team All-SEC honors and helped carry Texas from the NCAA Tournament First Four to the Sweet 16.

That production came with a specific shape. Swain is big and physical, with terrific body control and a ready-made slashing game. He got paint touches in college and finished at the rim at a tremendous level on self-created chances, while also passing at a solid level.

Draft stock and fit

The first-round label is about more than scoring. Swain was viewed as a polarizing prospect because the offense that makes him attractive also comes with a lower floor if his jumper does not hold up at NBA volume. The late-lottery range is where fit starts to matter, and teams have to decide whether they want to bet on tools or certainty.

The Charlotte Hornets and Oklahoma City Thunder were named as possible landing spots in that range. The Hornets need a wing who can consistently get his feet into the paint, while the Thunder have a strong track record of developing players like Swain and getting the most out of them. The Chicago Bulls at No. 15 were mentioned as a team that might be less inclined to take that chance.

From Columbus, Ohio

Swain’s path starts in Columbus, Ohio, where he grew up with four siblings and is the second oldest. He attended Columbus Africentric Early College, started there as a freshman and was an honorable mention all-state player before climbing to state player of the year in his division as a junior and senior.

He also became his school’s all-time leading scorer, won first-team all-state honors, and was one of the runners-up for the Ohio Mr. Basketball award as a senior. He was a four-star recruit and a consensus top-100 prospect in the 2023 recruiting class before choosing Xavier over Ohio State, Arizona State, Cincinnati and others.

At Xavier, he made the Big East’s All-Freshman team and missed the final five games that season after an appendectomy. He then entered the starting lineup as a sophomore and averaged 11 points as an excellent two-way player before making the move to Texas.

The next step belongs to the NBA Draft, where his range will tell teams how much they believe the shot and defensive growth can match the slashing package. Which club is willing to make that bet will define where the first round starts to bend.
