Daniel Muñoz settled Colombia’s place in the next phase of the World Cup with a 1-0 win over RD Congo in Guadalajara. His goal came in the 30th minute of the second half, and Colombia reached six points with a second straight victory to start the tournament.
Muñoz finishes the move
Juan Fernando Quintero started the action after coming on in the second half for James Rodríguez. John Córdoba then let the ball run through to Muñoz, who finished the move and put Colombia ahead for good. That was his second goal from the start of the World Cup.

Camilo Vargas holds the lead
Camilo Vargas protected the result with two late saves after a debut that had been poor by his own standard in the tournament’s opening game. Colombia also had to manage a messy attacking line: it scored four times in the match, but three goals were ruled out for offside, including two by Lucho Díaz and one by Muñoz.
The win gave Colombia six points after its 3-1 victory over Uzbekistán in the first group match. It also put the team through with a game left, the kind of start Colombia had last managed in Brasil 2014. RD Congo never found the equalizer, and Colombia closed the door on the kind of late pressure that could have changed the group picture.
Portugal waits in Miami
Colombia now finishes Group K against Portugal in Miami. The route to that match is already settled: two wins, six points, and a second-half goal from Muñoz that removed the need for any late scramble over qualification.
