Assim Madibo has been handed a five-match ban after his tackle on Ismael Kone in FIFA World Cup games broke the Canada midfielder’s leg. The suspension leaves Qatar without Madibo for its remaining World Cup matches, and FIFA said the disciplinary decision can be appealed.
Madibo and Kone in Vancouver
The incident came in the 51st minute of Canada’s 6-0 victory over Qatar in Vancouver last Thursday, when Madibo was shown a straight red card. Kone went off on a stretcher, and Nathan Saliba took his place before scoring Canada’s fourth goal.
Kone later underwent surgery on a broken tibia and fibula in his left leg. After the match, he posted, “You can’t even imagine how grateful I am to everyone who reached out and that has me in their prayers,” a line that matched the severity of the injury far better than the scoreboard did.
FIFA and Qatar Football Association
FIFA said the ban was for serious foul play and was issued on Wednesday. The comparison that will hang over the case is Luis Suarez’s nine-match suspension and four-month ban from all football-related activity for biting Giorgio Chiellini at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
Madibo and Qatar’s sports minister later visited Kone, and the Qatar Football Association said, “This visit reflects the spirit of sportsmanship and the strong relationships on and off the field. We wish the player a speedy recovery and a quick return to the pitch.” The association also said the wheelchair-bound Kone hugged Madibo during the visit, a detail that sits uneasily beside the red card and the five-match ban.
The appeal leaves the suspension open to review, but the immediate effect is clear: Madibo is out of Qatar’s remaining World Cup matches. For Qatar, the discipline is settled for now; for Kone, the recovery has already moved from the stretcher to surgery.
