Norwich City are back at the Colney training base this week, and Jacob Wright has an early opening to press his case under Philippe Clement. The 20-year-old made 13 starts last season, but the midfield picture is already tighter as pre-season begins.
That matters because City start the summer with five central midfielders after Sam Field’s permanent arrival, Kenny McLean is away at the World Cup, and Mirko Topic is not due back until the latter stages of pre-season. Wright has obvious technical talent, but Clement wants more athleticism, physicality and verticality from his midfielders.
Colney training base pressure
Clement will welcome the squad back this week, giving Wright a first chance to work through the demands of a fresh pre-season rather than just fight for minutes in a settled schedule. Norwich City finished ninth last term after climbing from the Championship relegation zone, so the next round of selection is about keeping that upward move going rather than simply making up the numbers.
Wright’s case is built on volume and opportunity. He made 13 starts last season, three more than during his half-season loan back in 2024/25, and that rise shows he has already moved closer to the squad picture. At 20, he is still at the stage where a strong July can change how a manager uses him.
Kenny McLean at the World Cup
The opening window is wider because McLean is at the World Cup and Topic is not expected back until later in pre-season. That leaves a smaller group to sort through the early work, and it gives Clement a cleaner look at the players who can handle the midfield demands from the start.
For Wright, the issue is not just touch or passing range. Clement has made clear through the shape of his midfield group that he wants runners who can cover ground, win contact and carry the ball forward with pace. The challenge is matching that brief while five central midfielders compete for the same space.
Norwich City begin pre-season action against King’s Lynn Town behind closed doors in just over a week, which makes the next few training days the most important stretch of the summer for Wright. If he wants a meaningful role in Clement’s squad, this is the part of pre-season where he has to show it first.
