Fran Jones lost 6-2 6-2 to Jelena Ostapenko in the opening round of the 2026 Lexus Eastbourne Open, and Kessler Tennis ends with the British No.4 leaving Eastbourne short of the level she needed. The defeat came in just over an hour, with The Championships, Wimbledon now the next target for Jones.
Ostapenko Takes Early Control
Ostapenko broke Jones in the first game and kept the pressure on from there. She broke again at 5-2, took the first set 6-2 in 31 minutes, then broke Jones’s opening service game in the second set.
Jones saved two match points before Ostapenko closed out the match 6-2 6-2. The scoreline matched the pattern of the contest: fast starts for Ostapenko, no long recovery for Jones, and no stretch where the British player could settle into rhythm.
Jones Sees The Gap
Jones, from West Yorkshire, said after the loss that she was disappointed. She also pointed to the level of opponent she faced, saying, "When Jelena has a good day, she has a good day. She’s pretty difficult to beat and she’s won here before, she’s very good on the grass."
Her broader read on the match was blunt. "It’s been a really tough year for me, I’ve had a lot of ups and downs and I’m actually not playing bad tennis at all right now," she said. The problem, in her view, is exposure: "I’ve not been exposed to that higher level [of competition] very often."
Wimbledon Pressure Builds
Jones added that the setback fits into a wider run of limited top-level matches since an injury at her career high. "The frustration of getting injured at my career high was that if you stay within your ranking bracket, you get exposed to this level consistently," she said. "It’s really good for me to see what the differences are, getting that exposure as I’m still so young in my tennis career."
The event sits on the grass-court path into The Championships, Wimbledon, and Ostapenko’s side of the draw remains live. She will face Hungarian opposition in the second round against either Panna Udvardy or Anna Bondar, who are scheduled to play their first-round match on Tuesday 23 June. For Jones, the useful part of this defeat is simpler: she now knows the size of the gap she still has to close before Wimbledon begins for her.
