Max Basing moved one win from Wimbledon after beating Tom Gentzch 7-5, 6-2 in Wimbledon qualifying on Wednesday. The 23-year-old returned after 10 weeks out with a torn hamstring and turned a first-round hurdle into a second-round place at Roehampton.

That leaves the world number 331 one victory away from the Wimbledon main draw. For a player who had already gone out in the first round of qualifying in Ilkley, Birmingham and Nottingham, this was the first clean step forward on grass in that stretch.

Roehampton and a hot start

Basing said the result came after he had been waiting for his level to rise again. He described the match as the product of work done while rebuilding match confidence after the injury layoff, and the scoreline showed he settled quickly enough to separate from Gentzch after taking the opening set 7-5.

The conditions at the Wimbledon Qualifying and Community Sports Centre in Roehampton were part of the test. Basing said, "I knew it was going to be a hot day" and added, "I think to start the match off, I was battling with that a bit mentally."

Stanford, Manacor and pressure

His route to this point runs through four years at the Rafa Nadal Academy in Manacor, from 14 to 18, and then Stanford, where he played U.S. college tennis before graduating in June 2025. Basing said that stretch helped shape how he handled pressure, especially in moments like this one.

"That transferred to playing college tennis. Playing for a team was something I'd never done before and that comes with a different kind of pressure," he said. "That pressure, I think, helps for bigger moments like it has been in the last couple of days."

One more win for Wimbledon

Once he got past the early heat, Basing said he found another gear. "And then it got to a point where I got past that threshold and was able to embrace it and play some of my best tennis that I've played for a while," he said.

The next match now carries the season's sharpest edge for him: one win takes him into the Wimbledon main draw, while another loss ends the qualifying run at the threshold he has just reached. In a field where he had already been stopped in three first rounds, this win changes the line from recovery to a real shot at his debut.
