Joe Espada Guides Astros Vs Tigers Into Four-Game Detroit Set

Astros vs Tigers opens with the Houston Astros heading into Detroit for a four-game road series, and Joe Espada’s club arrives with a chance to keep its June push moving. The Astros were 2.5 games out of first place in the American League West even while still under.500.

Joe Espada’s June Push

Houston has been playing good baseball in June, and a series victory over the Toronto Blue Jays helped carry that run into Detroit. The road trip is the final stop on a two-city, seven-game stretch, so the opener in Detroit carries the weight of the entire trip.

That record split is the sharp edge in this series. The Astros are close enough to first place to keep pressure on the top of the division, but the sub-.500 mark shows they still have work to do before that gap turns into real control.

Detroit Tigers in Detroit

The Detroit Tigers entered the season as the odds-on favorite to win the AL Central, but they have struggled through the year. Now they get Houston at the end of the Astros’ trip, with the series starting Thursday and stretching through Saturday.

Thursday’s matchup sends Tatsuya Imai for the Astros against Troy Melton for the Tigers. Imai is 4-3 with a 6.15 ERA, while Melton enters at 4-0 with a 2.56 ERA.

Friday brings Spencer Arrighetti for the Astros against Keider Montero for the Tigers. Arrighetti is 7-3 with a 3.13 ERA, and Montero is 3-5 with a 3.68 ERA. Saturday’s Tigers starter is Framber Valdez, who is 4-5 with a 3.91 ERA, while the Astros starter is listed as TBD.

Saturday’s TBD for The Astros

The missing Houston name on Saturday is the one item left open in the series plan. The first two games already map out a pair of pitching contrasts, and the final game will depend on who the Astros choose to send out after Valdez.

Houston is also carrying three players on the 10-day injured list: Braden Shewmake with a right adductor strain, Nick Allen with a Grade 1 left hamstring strain, and LaMonte Wade Jr. with right hamstring soreness. For Espada, the series in Detroit asks for depth, rotation order, and a clean finish to the trip in the same week.
