Firefighters were still tackling a wildfire on Tintwistle Moor on Thursday after Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service was called to the blaze at 22:11 BST on Wednesday. The fire involved moorland and woodland above Woodhead Road and led to the closure of the A628 Woodhead Pass.
Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service said the fire had affected 400 sq m of land. Six fire crews, a water carrier and a welfare unit were at the scene on Thursday, while National Highways said the A628 Woodhead Pass was shut in both directions between the A57 and A616.
The incident near Glossop added another layer of disruption for anyone using the route through the area. People who could see or smell smoke were told to keep their windows and doors closed, and people were urged to avoid the area.
Woodhead Road and Tintwistle Moor
The call came in late on Wednesday, then the scene changed twice in the early hours of Thursday. Fire crews left at 02:00 because of failing light, then returned at 04:00 while the fire was still active. That gap shows how quickly the response had to be adjusted as conditions changed on the moor above Woodhead Road.
The size of the affected area also gives the clearest measure of what crews were dealing with. At 400 sq m, the blaze had spread across a patch of moorland and woodland large enough to keep multiple crews occupied through Thursday.
National Highways and the A628
The road closure ran between the A57 and A616, which cut off a section of the A628 Woodhead Pass in both directions. For drivers, that meant the route could not be used as a through road while the fire remained active nearby.
The advice for people in the smoke zone was simple and immediate: stay inside with windows and doors closed, and keep clear of the area. Until the fire is brought under control, the practical next step for road users is to use another route rather than wait at the closure point.
By Thursday, the question for anyone affected by the closure was no longer where the fire started, but how long crews would need to keep the pass shut. The response on the moor showed the fire was still live enough to keep crews on scene and traffic stopped on the A628 Woodhead Pass.
