Turkey vs USA has lost its edge before the first whistle. The United States have already secured Group D first place, Turkey will finish bottom, and Mauricio Pochettino is set to rotate his XI at the Los Angeles Stadium on Thursday.
That shift changes the match for one clear reason: the United States will use it to manage Christian Pulisic and the booking-prone players before next Wednesday’s last-32 match in Santa Clara. Four key players — Folarin Balogun, Antonee Robinson, Tyler Adams and Chris Richards — are one booking away from suspension.
Mauricio Pochettino’s rotation plan
Pochettino already showed how far he is willing to go with selection changes. In November, he fully rotated the United States team against Uruguay, then watched the United States win 5-1 in Tampa. Alex Freeman scored twice in that match, giving the coach evidence that changes can still produce control and goals.
After the Uruguay match, Pochettino gave his players a four-minute speech about putting the team first and about commitment being bigger than player names. He said, “It’s bigger because it’s a dream that we were talking [about] in the last few days... to be realistic and then do the impossible.” He added: “That is our objective.”
Yellow cards and next Wednesday
The yellow-card issue gives the game a practical edge even without standings pressure. Pochettino said, “I think it's an easy answer for the guys that have yellow cards,” and the coaching staff can now decide whether to protect Balogun, Robinson, Adams and Richards from a suspension that would rule them out of the last-32.
That leaves the United States with a narrow task: keep momentum, avoid unnecessary bookings, and leave the most vulnerable players out of trouble before the knockout stage. Pochettino also said, “Because I think we need to really believe, really believe that we can win and beat any team.”
USA, Turkey and Santa Clara
The United States earned this position by beating Paraguay and Australia in their first two World Cup games. Turkey enters the match after failing to threaten the top of Group D, and the result no longer alters the group order. Miguel Delaney’s reporting for The Independent framed the game as a chance for Pochettino to learn more, especially about Christian Pulisic’s fitness, while the result itself no longer changes the bracket.
The United States would currently face Bosnia and Herzegovina in the last-32, but the immediate decision sits with Pochettino’s team selection against Turkey. If he does rest Pulisic and the four players one booking from suspension, the United States will still walk into Santa Clara next Wednesday with the same route into the knockout round — only with fewer risks attached.
