Steve Clarke Faces Fifa World Cup Third-place Standings After Brazil Loss

Scotland’s 3-0 loss to Brazil in Miami leaves their FIFA World Cup third-place standings path dependent on results elsewhere. Steve Clarke’s team sit on three points with a minus three goal difference and still need help to reach the last 32.

Clarke and Robertson react

Clarke did not soften the blow. “I think we’re going home,” he said after the match, then added that Brazil’s quality in the final third made the difference and that Scotland created chances but not enough of them. He also said, “The fans have been absolutely brilliant. But don’t forget this group of players brought them to America. The fans appreciate what this group has done for them.”

Andy Robertson was just as blunt about the position Scotland had put themselves in. “As a collective we didn’t want to put ourselves in a position of having to watch every game and hope for favours,” he said. “If you ask me now, I don’t think it’s enough, I don’t think we’ve done enough.”

Brazil in Group C

Brazil topped Group C after the win, with Carlo Ancelotti saying the target had been to finish first. “The squad played a solid game,” he said. “The goal was to come first in this group.”

Ancelotti also used Neymar for the closing 14 minutes, his first Brazil appearance since late 2023. He said, “He deserved the opportunity which is why I gave that to him,” and added, “Because of his quality, I think he can play and help the team.”

Scotland back to Charlotte

John McGinn called it “unlikely” that Scotland will remain in this tournament, and Clarke’s squad now have to wait on other results to see whether three points and a minus three goal difference are enough among the eight best third-placed teams. Scotland will fly back to their training base in Charlotte on Thursday and wait for the standings to clear.

That leaves the route simple only on paper. Scotland cannot change their own position now; they need the math elsewhere to fall their way before the last 32 is decided.
