Spain Vs Uruguay: Luis de la Fuente targets top spot in Group H

Spain vs Uruguay in Guadalajara has top spot in Group H on the line. Spain can finish first with a win on Friday, while Uruguay need at least a point to be sure of reaching the Round of 32.

Spain arrive with four points after a 0-0 draw with Cape Verde and a 4-0 win over Saudi Arabia. That second result restored momentum after the opening draw, and it came after Lamine Yamal was limited to a cameo off the bench in Spain's first game because a hamstring injury hindered the end of his season with Barcelona.

Lamine Yamal and Spain's response

Yamal opened the scoring against Saudi Arabia after coming on in that second matchday game. He said after the win: "The first game wasn’t really us, it was different, but now we’ve arrived and we’re going for more," and Luis de la Fuente backed that mood by pushing back at the criticism aimed at Spain.

De la Fuente said: "It’s crazy to question this team." He added: "You can have better days, worse days, normal days, but questioning, doubting this generation of very young footballers, with a bright future, I think it’s unfair," and Spain now carry that debate into the one game that decides whether they stay on the top line of the group or settle for a more difficult route.

Uruguay and Marcelo Bielsa

Uruguay opened with a 1-1 draw against Saudi Arabia before drawing 2-2 with Cape Verde after conceding an avoidable opener from a long-range free-kick. Marcelo Bielsa said: "The organisational mistakes that were made, they always fall upon the [head coach]," and he added: "There is no magical recipe whatsoever to fix them."

Bielsa also said: "It goes without saying we paid a very high cost for those mistakes," and that is the pressure point for Uruguay now. Darwin Nunez made an impact off the bench, but Uruguay still need at least a point in Guadalajara to be sure of progression.

Guadalajara and the bracket

The match is the only clash of former FIFA World Cup winners in the group stage of this edition, and it carries bracket value beyond Group H. If Spain win, they will face Austria or Algeria in the Round of 32, while a draw or better keeps Uruguay on course to advance from third if the table breaks their way.

The kickoff is set for Friday at 6pm local time, which is 00:00 GMT. Spain know exactly what a win gives them; Uruguay know exactly what a point avoids. Spain vs Uruguay now comes down to one simple difference in Guadalajara: top spot, or the longer road.
