Jalen Duren considers sign-and-trade after Pistons’ offer

Jalen Duren is planning to explore sign-and-trade scenarios after the Detroit Pistons’ initial restricted free agency offer left him underwhelmed. The move puts his immediate contract path in play on Tuesday, when those discussions are permitted.

At 22, Duren is eligible for a five-year, $287.1 million extension because he made the All-NBA third team. That offer level would take up 30 percent of the Pistons’ salary cap, which is why the gap between the sides now carries more weight than a routine negotiation.

Detroit Pistons and Jalen Duren

The Pistons finished 60-22, then lost to the Cleveland Cavaliers in the second round. Duren was a major part of that run in the regular season, averaging 19.5 points and 10.5 rebounds in 70 games while shooting 65 percent overall and finishing sixth in the league in Player Impact Estimate.

His playoff line was different. Against the Orlando Magic and the Cleveland Cavaliers, he averaged 10.2 points and 8.5 rebounds in 14 games, shot 51.4 percent, and posted a playoff Player Impact Estimate of 8.7. The drop gives the front office a cleaner reason to press for structure, not just salary, as the talks move past the first offer.

Trajan Langdon on future cost

Trajan Langdon signaled the cost issue in a May 19 news conference, saying, “Obviously, JD and AT will be expensive,” and adding, “Once that happens, the optionality decreases.” He also said, “This isn’t a one-year thing,” and, “We have to keep that in mind as well.”

He went further: “Not just say, OK, we’re going to do this next year just because of (our success this year). …It also impacts our future planning, so we’re going to be very mindful of that.” For the Pistons, that means Duren’s situation is tied to broader roster planning, not just one player’s price tag, and Trajan Langdon says restricted free agent Jalen Duren talks stall sits at the center of it.

Tuesday’s sign-and-trade path

Duren’s next move now runs through the rules on sign-and-trade discussions. Once Tuesday arrives, that path opens as a possible way to resolve the standoff if Detroit decides not to bridge the gap on a new deal.

The Pistons have to choose whether to keep pressing toward an extension or engage on a different framework, and Duren has already shown enough production to make the decision matter. Even with the regular-season numbers in his favor, the playoff dip leaves the negotiations with real friction — and the first offer did not settle it. A separate Luka Dončić wants an A-List center as Lakers check Jalen Duren note only adds pressure to a situation that is already moving toward a decision point.
