Jared Koenig set for return as Cubs Vs Brewers opens Friday

Cubs vs Brewers opens this weekend at American Family Field, and the first lineup move comes on Milwaukee's side: Jared Koenig is expected to be activated ahead of Friday's series opener. The Brewers enter with a seven-game lead over the Cardinals and Cubs in the NL Central, so this three-game set lands in the middle of their push to protect it.

Milwaukee's 33-15 surge

Since the beginning of May, the Brewers have gone 33-15 and climbed to 49-29, which puts them 20 games over.500 entering Thursday. That run has given them room in the division, even while the roster keeps absorbing injuries.

Milwaukee is without Brandon Lockridge, the only Brewers position player on the injured list, and he is slated to be out until late July after arthroscopic knee surgery. Carlos Rodriguez is expected back in late July, Logan Henderson and Coleman Crow in early July, DL Hall in late July, and Rob Zastryzny in late June or early July.

The Brewers' offense has held together without much power. They are hitting.254/.338/.391 with a.729 OPS that ranks 11th, but they have only 70 home runs, which ranks 28th. Even so, they have scored 407 runs, third in the league, and stolen 77 bases, fifth.

Chicago's recent push

The Cubs arrive at 44-37 after a 9-3 stretch against the Giants, Rockies, Blue Jays, and Mets. That run included a four-game sweep of the Mets in New York, a useful burst before they walk into the division race.

Their lineup leans on Pete Crow-Armstrong, who leads the Cubs with 17 home runs and is hitting.287/.367/.521 with 18 steals. Ian Happ has 16 home runs, while Michael Busch owns a.370 on-base percentage thanks to a team-high 54 walks and has added nine home runs.

Chicago's pitching staff is thinner than the record suggests. Ben Brown, Edward Cabrera, Justin Steele, Jaxon Wiggins, Daniel Palencia, Jameson Taillon, Riley Martin, Hunter Harvey, Porter Hodge, Cade Horton, and Shelby Miller are all unavailable, leaving the weekend series to test depth as much as form.

Cooper Pratt and the rotation

One Brewers bat has quietly added another layer to the weekend. Cooper Pratt has seven hits in nine games and four stolen bases after the Brewers signed him to an eight-year extension before he even set foot in the majors.

Jake Bauers still leads Milwaukee's power numbers with 14 homers and 48 RBIs, while Brice Turang has 11 homers and Jackson Chourio has 10. That balance gives Milwaukee enough offense to survive stretches when the ball does not leave the park.

The largest unanswered item is the pitching order for the three games. Jared Koenig's return gives Milwaukee one arm back, and Brian Fitzpatrick is set to meet with Dr. Keith Meister on June 30 to determine whether Tommy John surgery is needed. For a division leader that has built a seven-game cushion but still carries multiple absences, the weekend starts with one question that will shape the series: which pitchers will start each game?
