Fernando Mendoza is learning the NFL with Tom Brady in his corner. The Las Vegas Raiders rookie quarterback said Brady has been advising him as he adjusts to the pro game after being the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft.
Brady’s message to Mendoza
Mendoza said he usually keeps those conversations private, but he did lay out the core of Brady’s message: a quarterback has to be the most of everything. He said Brady told him he needs to be the most competitive, the most of a leader, and the toughest player on the field and in his mind.
He added that quarterbacks have to embody those traits and lead by example before they earn the respect of teammates. That standard is the baseline Brady is pressing on a rookie who already arrives with the weight of the 2025 Heisman Trophy and the expectations that come with being the first player taken in the draft.
Las Vegas Raiders room
The Raiders have built the quarterback setup to give Mendoza room to learn. Klint Kubiak has an experienced option in Kirk Cousins, and the structure around the rookie suggests he does not need to be forced into the speed of the pro game right away.
That matters because Mendoza’s path is not the usual rush from draft day to the lineup. He is arriving as the No. 1 pick, but he is also stepping into a room with a veteran quarterback already in place, which gives the Raiders a different way to manage his first stretch in the NFL.
Brady, Bledsoe, and the lesson
Brady’s advice carries the weight of his own early break. In 2001, he was called upon to replace an injured Drew Bledsoe, and that history sits behind the message Mendoza is hearing now: be ready, be demanding, and make the room trust you before the moment arrives.
For Mendoza, the practical next step is simple even if the timeline is not. He is working through Kubiak’s offense while the Raiders keep veteran cover in place, and the rookie’s early job is to absorb Brady’s standard without having to carry the offense before he is ready.
