Thomas Tuchel rules Reece James out of Panama with minor injury

Thomas Tuchel ruled Reece James out of Saturday’s match against Panama after the Chelsea defender picked up a minor hamstring injury. England lose a second full-back option at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with the group stage still moving toward the round of 32.

Thomas Tuchel weighs Reece James replacement before Panama becomes the immediate issue as England prepare for MetLife Stadium. James will not travel with the squad to New York for the match.

James misses New York trip

Tuchel said James is in “an accelerated rehabilitation programme” and “strongly believes he will be available for us in the tournament.” The manager also said, “It can be a tight one,” when asked about the possibility that the defender could miss the round of 32 game.

James started England’s first two World Cup group games, and he has 26 appearances for England. That makes this a selection problem now, not just a short-term absence on the bench.

England’s right-back options

England have already lost Tino Livramento, who went home last week with a calf injury. Tuchel has not called up Trent Alexander-Arnold for the tournament, so Djed Spence has become the leading specialist right-back in the squad.

Jarell Quansah has also been used at right-back, and Tuchel said Quansah has been “freed up” for that role by his decision to call up Trevoh Chalobah. Ezri Konsa has played there too, giving England a short list of fixes rather than a settled answer.

Thomas Tuchel steers England into round of 32 while the group picture keeps them near the knockout line. England are top on goal difference, one better than Ghana’s, and are almost guaranteed to advance as at least one of the best third-place finishers.

Panama and the knockout path

Elliot Anderson is also a doubt for England’s final Group L game against Panama because of muscle soreness. He started England’s first two matches in midfield against Croatia and Ghana, playing 163 minutes, so Tuchel may need to adjust more than one part of the XI.

The immediate task is simple: England must get through Panama without James, then decide whether his rehabilitation keeps him on track for the next stage. If they move on, the pressure shifts to whether the right side can hold together long enough for him to return.
