Jordan Pickford Faces Pressure After England’s Croatia Win

Jordan Pickford came through England’s win against Croatia, but his place drew scrutiny after an unconvincing start to the World Cup. Thomas Tuchel did not mask the issue: Pickford was told to recycle the ball quickly, and the England goalkeeper looked uncomfortable with that demand.

Tuchel’s words were blunt. After Pickford chose to pick the ball up rather than move it on to his right at pace, the England boss told him, "You know what you’re supposed to do, do as I told you!" That exchange captured the immediate complaint: not a mistake in isolation, but a goalkeeper struggling with the speed and shape Tuchel wants from the back.

Thomas Tuchel and Pickford

Pickford should have done better for Martin Baturina’s first-half leveller, and that moment sharpened the focus on his performance. He has 85 caps, the most of any keeper in major tournaments, and he first debuted in 2017, so the scrutiny is landing on a goalkeeper with far more experience than most of his rivals.

Anthony Barry also gave an abrasive half-time assessment, while Tuchel was seen telling Djed Spence to "wake up" in a training session segment observed by media. The message around England is plain: relaxed surroundings do not mean soft handling, and errors or hesitations are met quickly.

James Trafford and Pickford

James Trafford is viewed as a long-term challenger for Pickford’s place, but Tuchel is not going to change his goalkeeper mid-tournament. Trafford’s chances of dislodging Pickford for this summer’s tournament were ruined by his move to Manchester City, which leaves the competition for the England shirt on a different timeline.

That is where the pressure settles. Pickford remains England’s goalkeeper for now, but the challenge behind him has not gone away, and Kevin Ball’s assessment fits the picture: "He had a very challenging nature which I loved" and he would answer a challenge with "I’ll effing show you". Whether Trafford becomes a No 1 elsewhere and turns that into a real challenge for Pickford is the unresolved part.
