England vs Spain sat in the background, but the live update on day 17 was all about England’s lineup against Panama later in New Jersey. Thomas Tuchel was set to make changes, with Jarell Quansah in line for a World Cup debut at right-back.
Marcus Rashford was expected to replace Anthony Gordon on the left, Bukayo Saka was in line to come in for Noni Madueke, and Morgan Rogers was expected to take the place of the rested Declan Rice. Harry Kane was likely to start again, giving England a front line and midfield that looked different from the one before.
Quansah at right-back
The clearest shift was on the right side of defence. Quansah was expected to come in for the injured Reece James, and that would give him his first World Cup appearance if the selection went as projected.
That is a real change for England’s shape. A debutant at full-back alters how much support the side can give wide players, and it also gives Tuchel a different profile behind the attack when Panama try to sit deep or press early.
Rashford, Saka and Rogers
Up front, Rashford and Saka were both linked to starting roles, with Rogers expected to join Jude Bellingham in midfield. That combination would move England away from the previous setup and into a more direct, more flexible look on the ball.
Rice’s rest created the opening for Rogers, while Bellingham remained the constant in the middle of the pitch. For England, the choice was less about novelty than balance: the lineup had to protect the back line while still giving Kane enough service to stay central to the game.
Panama and José Córdoba
Panama’s main defensive reference point was José Córdoba, the likely marker for Kane. England and Panama had met only once before at the World Cup eight years ago, so this was still a fresh matchup even with the names on the England side changing.
Jonathan Wilson’s line on the tournament cut through the larger setting: “The World Cup exists in a state of perpetual flux.” He added, “It goes to new territories.” England’s own changes fit that idea in practical terms, with the answer still pending on whether Rashford, Saka, Rogers and Quansah would all be in the starting XI later in New Jersey.
