The Wimbledon 2026 schedule now has its sharpest early marker: Serena Williams opens her return against Maya Joint, while the draw has already spread the top seeds across four quarters. That leaves Williams inside Iga Swiatek’s section, with a possible third-round meeting against the defending champion if both advance.
Sabalenka Leads the First Quarter
Aryna Sabalenka heads the first quarter as the No. 1 seed. Jessica Pegula leads the second quarter as the No. 4 seed, giving the top half two of the draw’s highest-ranked players before a ball is struck.
That structure matters because it fixes the route through the bracket before play begins. Sabalenka, Pegula, Swiatek and Elena Rybakina are each separated into their own quarter, so the earliest pressure falls on the opening matches rather than on the seeds meeting immediately.
Swiatek and Williams in One Section
Swiatek leads the third quarter as the defending champion, and Williams lands in the same section. Williams is a 23-time Grand Slam champion and a seven-time Wimbledon singles champion, so her return carries more weight than a standard first-round opener.
The first match is against Maya Joint. If Williams gets through that, Alexandra Eala sits on the projected path in the second round, and Swiatek could be waiting in the third. That is the most demanding run in the draw’s early rounds for one of its biggest names.
Rybakina Anchors the Bottom Half
Elena Rybakina, the 2022 champion, leads the fourth quarter and gives the bottom half another former champion at the top. Four former champions are in the field, with Swiatek and Rybakina holding the two most recent Wimbledon titles among them.
Elsewhere, the first-round board includes Aryna Sabalenka against Teodora Kostovic, Leylah Fernandez against Janice Tjen, Bianca Andreescu against Zhang Shuai, and Maja Chwalinska against Mananchaya Sawangkaew. Emma Navarro also draws Paula Badosa, while Emma Raducanu enters as the highest-ranked British player after reaching the final at Queen's Club.
Raducanu could meet Sabalenka in the third round, and Sabalenka also carries a possible semifinal against Mirra Andreeva if both advance. Andreeva won her first Major at Roland Garros earlier this month, reached the Wimbledon quarterfinals last year, and brings a 4-2 head-to-head edge over the Belarusian into the bracket.
For Williams, the draw asks for immediate sharpness. A return against Joint is one hurdle; the section around her is the bigger one.
