Yaya Sithole answered his early-tournament setback with a strong midfield display as South Africa beat South Korea 1-0 in Monterrey. The win sent South Africa into the FIFA World Cup knockout stages for the first time, turning a rough opening into a result with real weight.

South Africa’s 1-0 breakthrough

Thapelo Maseko scored the 63rd-minute winner, and Sithole helped build the move that led to it. South Africa spent the rest of the match protecting that lead, with Sithole operating as the solitary screen in front of the back four.

That setup let Thalente Mbatha play a freer box-to-box role. It also gave South Africa a cleaner structure when South Korea pushed forward after Son Heung-min was introduced.

Sithole after Mexico

The 27-year-old had been under pressure since South Africa’s tournament opener against Mexico, when he turned the ball over cheaply for El Tri’s opening goal and was sent off after a reckless second-half challenge. He then missed South Africa’s draw with the Czech Republic through suspension before Hugo Broos brought him back against South Korea because Teboho Mokoena was absent for disciplinary reasons.

Sithole responded with a handful of crucial tackles and won the majority of his aerial duels. He also sat through South Korea’s second-half push and helped South Africa hold its shape until the final whistle.

Broos and South Africa

After the match, Sithole told SportyTV, “I didn’t have a good start to the tournament. There were many doubters. But that is how you bounce back, and I’m proud of myself” and “I want to thank my family … they supported me through the hardest time of my life. Everyone is happy now!”

He dropped to his knees when the final whistle blew in Monterrey. South Africa now moves into a round of 32 clash against Canada, with Sithole’s turnaround sitting at the center of the team’s first-ever passage to the FIFA World Cup knockout stages.
