Promise David was the name on the result line: Switzerland beat Canada 2-1 and finished top of World Cup Group B on June 24, 2026. Canada still went through to the last 32, but the loss decided first place and the route out of the group.
Vargas and Manzambi scored for Switzerland, while Jesse Marsch said Canada’s start was too cautious. He also said Alphonso Davies had been managed and should be ready for the next match, which gives Canada a clear personnel note even after the result went against them.
Switzerland and Canada reach the last 32
The match mattered because the 2-1 score settled the group order, not just the points tally. Switzerland ended top of Group B, and Canada advanced alongside them, so the immediate question after the final whistle was not whether either side stayed alive, but how the group had been sorted.
That same group logic also explains why Bosnia-Herzegovina’s 3-1 win over Qatar sat in the background of the evening. Bosnia-Herzegovina finished third on four points, while Qatar went out, leaving Group B with a clear finish line and no further room for movement after the final round of games.
Jesse Marsch on Canada’s start
Marsch did not hide the split between effort and execution. “Look, I know our team has heart.” He added: “I know we have a group that will give everything to every moment and that is something to be so proud of.”
He was sharper about the opening spell. “The start of the game I thought we were tentative and not aggressive enough, but we are going to focus on the positives and focus on the response. Again, good performances off the bench.” That is the useful read for Canada: the bench gave him something to point to, but the first-half edge was missing.
Alphonso Davies and the next match
Marsch’s tactical regret was even more specific. “The only thing I wish I had done differently - I was thinking about going five at the back at half-time to really lock things down. Coming out like that I think I should have done that.” In other words, he saw a tighter shape as the safer response once Canada had lost control of the early phase.
He also gave the clearest update on Alphonso Davies: “Alphonso [Davies] will be ready. We thought about Alphonso, but we thought to just manage him. He should be ready for the next match.” For Canada, that keeps one of its key players in view even after a night that belonged to Switzerland and the Group B table.
