Tyler Reddick’s NASCAR standings push took a hit on Sunday when engine trouble at Sonoma left him unable to keep up and Alex Bowman moved on in the opening round of the NASCAR In-Season Challenge. The top seed entered the race as the points leader, but the first-round loss ended his shot at the $1 million prize.

Reddick’s Radio Warning

Early in Sunday’s race, Reddick was already fighting a problem he could not clear. Over the radio, he told his team, “I can barely go fast,” then added, “I’m trying to understand what’s causing this.”

That gap never closed. Reddick could not overcome the deficit, and Bowman advanced while the top seed was sent out of the bracket immediately.

Bowman Advances, Reddick Falls

The loss mattered because Reddick arrived at Sonoma as both the top seed and the season points leader. He had the stronger starting position in the tournament, but the engine issue stripped away the advantage before the round could turn in his favor.

The bracket opened on Sunday with a major upset, and the result changed the In-Season Challenge right away. Reddick’s elimination removed one of the obvious title threats from the $1 million race, while Bowman stayed alive in the opening round.

The same opening round also produced cleaner escapes for others. Denny Hamlin spun out on Lap 64 but finished 26th to avoid an upset against Ty Dillon, who finished 35th. Ryan Blaney finished 6th, and Chase Elliot finished 17th, both moving through without the bracket turn taking them down.

Sonoma’s Other Bracket Moves

Shane van Gisbergen, the No. 14 seed against Ryan Preece, came out atop the leaderboards at Sonoma and recorded his second win of the season. That result sat beside Reddick’s exit as the opening round settled quickly into winners and survivors.

For Reddick, the practical damage is simple: the tournament path is gone, but the standings fight is still alive because he entered Sunday at the top of the season table. The immediate question after Sonoma is how badly the engine problem slowed that points lead, and whether the race left enough cushion to protect it.
